AI Consulting Rates in the UK (2026): Day Rates, Project Costs and How to Get Value

ByUmar Din FCCA, AI & Finance Transformation Lead
Published 17 October 2026

Umar is an FCCA-qualified accountant who founded Prime AI Solutions to help businesses implement AI in 8–12 weeks with guaranteed ROI, with deep expertise across finance, operations, and revenue functions. Previously at EY, HSBC, Shell, NatWest, Morgan Stanley, ASOS and Unilabs, his work bridges practical commercial experience with applied AI in regulated environments.

TL;DR

UK AI contractors advertise at a median of £564 a day. Consultancies charge more because they carry the method and the outcome: independent guides put boutique rates at roughly £1,500 to £4,000 a day, with the Big Four above that, and a mid-market AI strategy engagement at £50,000 to £150,000 before any build. Our rates are published below, starting with a fixed-price AI audit from £999. The best value is rarely the lowest day rate; it is the fewest days to a working result.

Almost nobody in AI consulting publishes prices, which makes a sensible budget hard to set. This guide brings together the market data that does exist, the ranges independent pricing guides report, and our own published rates, so you can see what you should expect to pay and what you get for it. Market figures were checked on 17 October 2026.

UK Market Day Rates for AI and Finance Systems Roles

ITJobsWatch tracks the day rates advertised for contract roles across the UK. These are what individual contractors are offered to work inside your team, under your direction, usually through a recruitment agency.

RoleMedian day rateMiddle half of rates
AI Consultant (contract)£564£500 to £675
Business Analyst (contract)£500£425 to £588
Finance Business Analyst (contract)£520£450 to £569
Dynamics 365 Consultant (contract)£509£461 to £616
Workday Consultant (contract)£688£650 to £782

Two things stand out. AI consulting commands a premium over general business analysis, and specialist ERP skills, Workday in particular, command more again. If your AI work runs through your ERP, expect to pay for both sets of skills, or find people who have both.

Consultancy and Big Four Rates

Consultancies charge more than contractors because they sell a result rather than time. They bring a method, experience from similar projects and responsibility for delivery, and the senior people at good firms do the thinking that a contractor would expect you to do. Independent UK pricing guides put boutique consultancy day rates at roughly £1,500 to £4,000, with the large strategy firms and the Big Four above that.

At project level, the same guides put a mid-market AI strategy engagement at between £50,000 and £150,000 before any build work starts. The reason is less the day rate than the shape of the team: a large firm's engagement carries partners, managers and junior consultants, and programme overhead on top. Our comparison of AI consultants, AI agencies and the Big Four covers when that is worth it.

Our Published Rates

We publish our rates because opacity is the industry's worst habit. All exclude VAT and reasonable expenses, and are set out in full on our work with us page.

EngagementRateTypical commitment
AI Opportunity Blueprint (fixed-scope audit)From £99914 days
Advisory or board advisorFrom £500 a day, or from £1,500 a month2 to 4 days a month
AI consultant or strategy consultant£1,000 to £2,000 a dayProjects of 4 to 12 weeks
AI business analyst£800 to £1,500 a day2 weeks to 6 months or more
AI implementation lead£900 to £1,800 a dayProjects of 4 to 12 weeks
AI solution architect£1,200 to £2,500 a dayEmbedded 3 to 12 months
Fractional Chief AI Officer£900 to £2,000 a day, or £5,500 to £12,000+ a month1 to 3 days a week
Training deliveryFrom £2,500 a session; programmes from £8,000Half a day to several months

Our rates sit between the contractor market and the large firms for a reason: you get the senior person who scoped the work doing it, with a method behind them, and no junior bench or programme overhead to fund.

What Drives the Cost of an AI Project

Four things move the price more than anything else. The number of systems involved, because every integration adds design, testing and support. The quality of your data, because poor coding and duplicate records turn a two-week build into a two-month clean-up. The controls required, because regulated or financial workflows need approval steps, audit trails and testing that a marketing chatbot does not. And how much change the team must absorb, because training and adoption are where most AI projects succeed or stall.

That is why a short, fixed-price discovery is worth doing first. It tells you which opportunities pay back, what each would cost to build and where the data or controls will cause trouble, before you commit to the larger figure.

How to Get the Best Value

  1. Buy the first step at a fixed price. A priced audit or discovery caps your risk and gives you a roadmap you own.
  2. Ask who does the work. A higher rate for a senior person often costs less overall than a cheaper team that needs supervision.
  3. Pay for specialism. A firm that already knows your processes does not bill you to learn them.
  4. Insist on ownership. Prompts, workflows, documentation and admin access should be yours when the engagement ends.
  5. Train the team. The cheapest AI project is the one your own people can run afterwards.
