Most finance change, from a new ERP to an AI pilot, succeeds or fails on the quality of the analysis before anything is built. That makes the finance business analyst one of the most valuable hires on a project, and one of the hardest to budget for, because rates vary widely with the skills involved. This guide sets out the market rates as checked on 17 October 2026, the ways to hire, and what you should expect for the money.
UK Day Rates for Finance Business Analysts
ITJobsWatch tracks the day rates advertised for contract roles across the UK. These are what contractors are offered to work inside your team, usually through a recruitment agency.
| Role | Median day rate | Middle half of rates |
|---|---|---|
| Business Analyst (all sectors) | £500 | £425 to £588 |
| Finance Business Analyst | £520 | £450 to £569 |
| Dynamics 365 Consultant | £509 | £461 to £616 |
| NetSuite roles | £550 | £450 to £600 |
| SAP FI/CO Consultant | £625 | Not published |
| Workday Consultant | £688 | £650 to £782 |
| AI Consultant | £564 | £500 to £675 |

The pattern is consistent: the more specialist the system or the skill, the higher the rate. A finance analyst who can also configure Workday or design an AI workflow is rarer than one who can do either, and priced accordingly. The business analyst median across all sectors was the same £500 a year earlier, so rates have been stable rather than rising.
Four Ways to Hire a Finance Business Analyst
| Route | Cost | Who directs the work | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contractor through an agency | From around £520 a day at the median | You direct the work | Extra capacity on a well-run programme |
| Consultancy business analyst | Ours: £800 to £1,500 a day | The analyst brings the method and owns the outcome | Finance, ERP and AI in one person; no in-house lead |
| Big Four or large integrator | Quoted per engagement | Part of a larger team | Very large programmes that need many analysts |
| Permanent hire | Salary plus employer costs and recruitment fees | Long-term ownership | An ongoing finance systems role, once the work is proven |
A contractor is the cheapest day rate and the right answer when an experienced programme or finance systems lead can direct them. Without that lead, the cheaper rate often becomes the more expensive project, because the analyst documents what they are told rather than challenging it.
A consultancy analyst costs more per day and is accountable for the result: they bring a method, challenge the requirements and know what good looks like from similar projects. A permanent hire makes sense once the work is proven and ongoing, and is often the second step after a consultancy has set things up.

What a Good Finance Business Analyst Brings
Process knowledge first. They should understand the close, accruals, reconciliations, AP, AR and reporting well enough to spot where a requirement will break a control or create a manual workaround. Then system knowledge: enough of the ERP to know what it does out of the box, which features are licensed but unused, and when a customisation is really a process problem.
Increasingly, they also need to understand AI. Which steps can an AI tool prepare, where must a person approve, and what will the auditors want to see? An analyst who can answer those questions during requirements saves a redesign later. Our guides to Workday vs SAP and Dynamics 365 Finance vs Business Central show the kind of system decisions a finance analyst should help you make.
