Microsoft's New Copilot App: What Finance Teams Need to Know
On 25 September 2026 Microsoft brought chat, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and its long-running agents together in a single Copilot app. For finance teams, two things changed at once: what Copilot can do inside the tools you already use, and how you pay for it.

Start the free previewMost UK finance teams we work with already live in Microsoft 365, so Microsoft's choices shape their AI more than any other vendor's. This launch is a good example. The capability is genuinely useful, but the billing change is the part a finance leader will feel first, in a forecast line that no longer behaves like a licence.
What Microsoft's New Copilot App Includes
Microsoft describes the new app as an all-in-one place for AI at work. According to GeekWire's report, it combines AI chat, coding and long-running agents in a single app for business and personal use, and brings full versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint inside Copilot, so people can create and edit documents with AI and their colleagues without switching apps.
The main components relevant to finance:
- Chat and Office apps together: Copilot chat with Word, Excel and PowerPoint built in, rather than Copilot as a side panel in each.
- Cowork: Microsoft's agent mode for multistep work across files and apps.
- [Autopilot](https://venturebeat.com/technology/microsoft-revamps-its-copilot-ai-with-a-persistent-autopilot-agent-and-hosting-for-ai-generated-apps): previously known as Scout, a persistent agent with its own identity and workspace inside your Microsoft 365 tenant, which can handle recurring responsibilities and pick projects back up after several days.
- Frontier models: access to the newest models, including OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Claude Fable, alongside Microsoft's defaults.
- Copilot Managed Runtime: hosting for AI-built apps inside your organisation's Microsoft 365 boundary, with version control.
The direction is clear. Microsoft wants Copilot to be the place work happens, not an assistant bolted onto each application, and it is competing directly with OpenAI's and Anthropic's own workspace products to get there. Availability of each component varies by tenant and region, so confirm with IT what your organisation can actually use.
How Microsoft Copilot Pricing Now Works
This is the part finance leaders should read twice. Copilot now has two ways to pay.
A per-user licence covers everyday use: chat, and Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. In the US, Microsoft 365 Copilot is listed at $30 per user per month on annual billing for enterprise customers, with a lower price for the Business tier. Check Microsoft's pricing page or your partner for current UK pricing, as promotional rates have changed during 2026.
Usage-based billing covers the intensive work: Cowork, Code and Autopilot agents, plus the newest frontier models such as OpenAI's Astra and Anthropic's Claude Fable. Usage is charged in Copilot Credits on top of the licence. When Autopilot's preview expanded at the end of September, Microsoft had not published detailed usage rates.
For budgeting, this changes the shape of the AI cost line. A licence is fixed, predictable and easy to forecast per head. Usage billing scales with how much your people use agents and frontier models, and it can grow quickly if a popular agent runs every day across a team.
Three practical steps: ask your Microsoft partner for the current Copilot Credits rates and any included allowance, find out whether spending caps or alerts can be set at tenant or department level, and treat agent usage as a variable cost in next year's forecast rather than folding it into the per-seat line.
What It Means for Finance Work in Excel
For most finance teams, Excel is where the value will show up first. Having the full application inside Copilot, rather than a chat panel beside a workbook, makes it easier to ask for analysis, build a summary or restructure a model in one place.
Useful starting points that work with the per-user licence:
- Explaining a variance table in plain English for a management pack.
- Summarising a large transaction extract by supplier, cost centre or month.
- Writing and checking formulas, and explaining an inherited model you did not build.
- Turning a month-end checklist into a tracker with owners and due dates.
The standing rule still applies: Copilot can be confidently wrong about numbers. Treat every output as a draft, check calculations against the source, and be particularly careful with anything that feeds a board pack or a regulatory return. Our guide to Copilot vs Claude for Excel finance work compares the options in detail. A simple habit helps: ask Copilot to show the formula or the source rows behind any figure it gives you.
Prompting also matters more than most people expect. A short request gets a generic answer, while a structured prompt with your context, an example of the output you want and a clear format gets a usable draft. The same skill works in Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude.

Copilot Agents in Finance: Opportunity and Controls
Cowork and Autopilot are where the new app goes beyond drafting. Microsoft's own example showed an agent pulling information from email, Teams discussions, Dynamics 365 inventory records and spreadsheets to identify a supply problem. The finance equivalents are easy to imagine: tracking month-end tasks, chasing approvals, comparing supplier statements with the ledger, or collecting board pack inputs.
Microsoft has put governance at the centre of the pitch. Each agent has its own identity, and Agent 365 provides permissions, audit records and administrative controls. That is a strong foundation, but it is your organisation's settings that determine what an agent can actually do, and the announcement did not set out a complete action-by-action approval policy. Those decisions sit with your administrators, which is why finance needs to be in the room.
Before agents are switched on for finance, make sure the finance team is part of the decision on their permissions. The principles are simple: a named owner for every agent, the minimum access it needs, human approval for anything that moves money or changes records, and an audit trail you have tested. Our guide to always-on AI agents covers the controls in more detail, and our AI governance framework for finance puts them in a wider context.
What Finance Teams Should Do Next
Most UK finance teams do not need to make a big decision this quarter, but a few small steps will put you ahead.
Find out what your tenant has. Ask IT which parts of the new Copilot app are enabled, whether your organisation is in the Autopilot preview, and which frontier models are available. Rollouts vary by organisation and region. Note who in IT owns Copilot settings, because you will need them again.
Get the billing model into the forecast. Separate fixed licences from variable agent and frontier-model usage, and agree who owns that budget line and what alerts are in place.
Build the skills before the agents. The teams that get the most from Copilot are the ones whose people already write good prompts and check outputs properly. That is a far cheaper place to start than agent usage, and it makes agent adoption safer when it comes.
Pick one measurable use case. Variance commentary, supplier statement reconciliation or month-end tracking are good candidates. Measure the time saved against a baseline so your next Copilot decision is based on evidence. Our Copilot setup guide for finance walks through the configuration. Revisit the numbers after a quarter, when you will also know what agent usage is costing.
